This assessment relates to the following subject learning objectives:

PART 1: ESSAY
From your learning this semester write an academic essay of 1500 words (+/-10% excluding
references) in which you critically evaluate and draw conclusions about one the following topics
from the second half of the semester (weeks 6-11). You will need to support your argument with one
or two of the examples provided or choose your own examples.
1. MANAGING CULTURES: A strong organisational culture leads to excellence in performance.
Discuss and evaluate this statement, illustrating your argument with examples. These
include: Zappos, Cricket Australia, Westpac, or Theranos.
2. MANAGING CONFLICT, POWER, POLITICS & DECISION MAKING: Organisational conflict can
be a good thing. Discuss and evaluate this statement, illustrating your argument with
examples. These include Hachette, the ABC, or the Liberal Party of Australia.
3. MANAGING COMMUNICATIONS: Critically evaluate the communication response of an
organisation in crisis. Examples include: The Australian Government (NSW/Victoria
bushfires), An Australian Bank (Hayne’s Royal Commission), UTS (COVID-19) and The Catholic
Church (Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse).
4. MANAGING KNOWLEDGE, INNOVATION & CHANGE: Critically evaluate the role that
resistance to change plays in managing a change process in organisations. Discuss,
illustrating your argument with examples. Examples include the Hong Kong Government,
Amazon, Uber, or Blockbuster
5. MANAGING CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY ETHICALLY: The business of business is
business. Discuss and evaluate this statement, illustrating your argument with examples.
These include: Country Road, BP, Qantas, Ben and Jerry’s.
6. MANAGING GLOBALISATION (Only to be attempted on discussion with your tutor):
Globalisation is a beneficial strategy for organisations. Discuss and evaluate this statement
with reference to an organisation’s stakeholders, illustrating your argument with examples.
These include Holden, Atlassian, Aldi, or ABN Amro.
We expect you to not just describe material from your sources, but to analyse and critically engage
with this material. You should put forward your own original argument in your introduction and
then compare it to arguments made by the other scholars working on your topic.
