PAPER FORMAT: Given the topics there are two ways of writing a paper about:
In a REVIEW ARTICLE you collect relevant publications, perhaps published in the last 3-5 years, about a specific topic and write a critical review about the topic displaying important experiments with results (Figures and Tables) and discussion. An overarchingconclusion is required for a review article.
In a CURRENT OPINION ARTICLE: you find one research article you like (andthat fits in one of the currently specified topics) and rewrite the paper by inspiring your own opinion upon it. Thus, the critical sections of a COP are Discussion and Conclusion.
Any paper (REVIEW or COP) must contain the following: Title; Abstract, suggested less than 100 words; Introduction, free text; Results (COP paper) or Report(REVIEW papers), suggested 750 words; Discussion, suggested 300 words andConclusion, suggested with less than 100 words. Figures and Tables are required forboth REVIEW and COP papers and are not included in the above suggested text limits.
For COP and or REVIEW papers Material and Methods do not need to be addedto the main body of the paper. They can be copied and pasted into an Appendix.
LONG-STEPS TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLEWhen you organize your article, the first thing to consider is that the order of sections will be very different than the order of items on your checklist.• An article begins with the Title, Abstract and Keywords.
• The article text follows the IMRaD format, which responds to the questions below: Introduction: What did you/others do? Why did you do it?
• Methods: How did you do it?
• Results: What did you find?
• Discussion: What does it all mean?
The main text is followed by the Conclusion, References and if needed Supporting Materials.
Steps to Organizing your Manuscript
• Prepare the Figures and Tables. (If you are rewriting a paper adding your own opinions or making a review of the topic – feel free to copy and paste Figures and Tables, but remember to reference the source)• Write the Methods (in most instances Mat/Meth can be pasted, however in some instances where two or more papers are used to consolidate the methods section needs to be customized.Write up the Results.
Write the Discussion. Finalize the Results and Discussion before writing the introduction. This is because, if the discussion is insufficient, how can you objectively demonstrate the scientific significance of your work in the introduction?
Write a clear Conclusion.
Write a compelling introduction.
Write the Abstract.
Compose a concise and descriptive Title.
Format References – you can download Endnote for free from the OSU Edmon Low Library and use it to organize your supporting articles (all the ones you use to write the Introduction, Results and Discussion), use Endnote for in text citations and final reference formatting (any style is accepted as far the style conforms with some public standard, e.g., Annotated, Author-Date, Numbered, MHRA etc.).Evaluation criteria (long rubric): Abstract (10%, 25 points): -15, the abstract does not summarize everything; -25, abstract is missing.
