Fulfillment in Matthew

One of the major features of Matthew is Matthew’s emphasis on Jesus as the fulfillment of the storyline of the Bible. Even from the opening verse of his gospel, Matthew emphasizes that Jesus is the one who has come to fulfill God’s promises to Abraham, Israel, and David. With this in mind, write an exegetical paper of 1,300-1,500 words using one of the following fulfillment texts below: Matthew 1:18-25 Matthew 2:1-12 Matthew 2:13-15 Matthew 2:16-18 Matthew 2:19-23 The paper should focus on how Matthew portrays Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promises. In order to accomplish this, the following questions should be addressed in the essay: As Matthew quotes from or alludes to the Old Testament, how does his use of the Old Testament show Jesus’s identity and mission? How do the events of the passage parallel events in Israel’s history, and what does this teach us about Jesus’s identity and mission? From your exegetical process, what similarities do you find regarding the audience and the background (i.e., what was happening at the time) between the Old Testament time and when Matthew is writing? In addition to the textbook and the Bible, use at least three other scholarly sources from the GCU Library.
