For the past 120 years- “between 1891 and 1920- [America has] received some 18 million men, women and children from other nations” (Bush 554) and causes one of the serious problem in the society. Therefore, immigration reform has been intensely debate among the citizen due to illegal immigrant issues that have become prevalent in United States. However, validating the illegal immigrant workers status should be considered strongly because their strong work ethic and other important American values such as an entrepreneurial spirit that strengthens the economy justify their need for a legal system that protects them from employer’s exploitation.
Illegal immigrant workers have work harder than anyone else just to keep their job secure. This can be indicates by them taking “12-hour days doing menial labor for low wages”( Rana Foroohar 24) or working multiple jobs in a day or week tirelessly without complaining nor give up easily yet appreciate and take every single opportunity they can in the state to receive a constant income to support their family. For instance, they fulfil the jobs that have not been taken by American such as “dirty” jobs like cleaning or hard, physical labour or working in a nursing home and taking care of elderly. Without the illegal immigrant workers, the nursing home would have face the lack of worker issue and elderly will not be taken care of. Hence, this has demonstrates that the illegal immigrant workers has bring with them a strong work ethic with them to the American’s society.
Moreover, the illegal immigrant workers usually travel far away from their homeland to America and some of them even “risk their lives in dangerous desert border crossings, or entrusted their lives to the brutal rings of heartless smugglers” (Bush 554) just to earn a living in the states for their precious family back in the homeland. This is because the illegal immigrant workers might be facing financial problem back in their homeland. Therefore, it is understandable the illegal immigrant workers are here to seek a better life just like others. Thus, they should be understood, respected and given equal opportunities regardless their illegal status yet consider granting them their legal status.
Furthermore, illegal immigrant workers also contribute positive important values and beliefs to the country which make America a better nation. George Bush stated that “[the illegal immigrant workers have] bring to America the values of faith in God, love of family, hard work and self-reliance”(Bush 555) and these kinds of immigrant workers have been presenting themselves as good role models to the Americans and try to influence the determined, hard-working, self-confident, independent, courageous, adaptable, broad-minded, friendly and internationalism to the society. As a result, it illustrates that the illegal immigrant workers ought to be granted legal status due to their good qualities and contribution which created America a great nation.
Besides the above aspects, the illegal immigrant have been playing significant role in the economy system in America. They have brought in entrepreneurial spirit to America. For instance, Pierre Omidyar is the founder of eBay is the son of Iranian immigrants and has successfully contributed to America; the daughter of a Filipina immigrant who named Caterina Fake has also contributed to the nation by founded Flickr. This has revealed that if the undocumented workers granted legal status in the states, it is more likely for them to be innovative and start a business and contribute to the economy since they are now legalized which benefits both side.
Also, there are many people have been deeply debating on the unemployment rate, social security and taxes issue. First of all, according to the newspaper “the time”, many Americans have been discussing unemployment rate in 2012 that has tremendously increases and baffle that is it due to the aliens’ presence since it has been major issue in America. However, it is definitely not due to the illegal immigrants since they are just taking the “jobs American citizens are not filling” (Bush 554). Hence, it is quite as evident that it does not affect the employment rate of the nation.
Secondly, the local citizens have also expressed their thoughts that some of the illegal immigrant work in America and send the wages back home tax-free which leads to the negative sides of the country’s economy. In fact, it is cleared that there are no free things in this world and human needs food and drink to survive. Therefore, it is undoubtedly that the illegal immigrant has spent money in the states for one’s essential and sales tax has included in every single bill. This has shown that the money has not flow out from the country. Meanwhile, the illegal immigrant has never refuse to pay taxes but to work harder and get better wages, grab every single opportunity they can to live a better life. According to CBO forecasts, granting immigrant legal status would “reduce the federal deficit by $685 billion” (Rana Foroohar 24) and “U.S. would add $1.5 trillion to the economy over years”. ”(Rana Foroohar 24) Therefore, Americans can think that the higher wages the illegal immigrant workers earns, the more taxes they have to pay which translates into more tax revenue and increases consumer purchasing power which would certainly benefits the public treasury and the American economy as a whole.
In addition, granting illegal immigrant legal status would also decreases the crime rates in the states. This is because government can trace the immigrants conveniently especially the technology nowadays is getting more advanced. At least after the undocumented immigrants has granted legal status, the Government are able to “[match] all visa applicants against an expanded screening list to identify terrorists and criminals and immigration violators” (Bush 556) and also have a better record of the immigrant to keep track of them rather than letting them smuggle or sneak in and out illegally without knowing their background status. Indeed it is certain that by granting undocumented immigrants benefit the nation.
Last but not least, the major issue that often happen towards the illegal immigrant worker is being taken advantages by the employer. Some of the illegal immigrants have forcefully accepted long-houred job, and have been mistreated and abused badly by their employer but they never dare to condemn fear. In fact, this is because there are no laws or any legal systems to protect them. Also, they have been treated and discriminated as a criminal whom has broken the law and live “in the shadows of American life” (Bush 555) due to illegal status. They never dare to condemn their fear and insecurity because they are afraid to be jobless or to be sent back home, never being able to return forever. Therefore, America government should consider to make the “immigration laws more rational, and more humane” (Bush 556) since they are here to pursue a better life just like others. Equally important, the government should not let the business man take advantages of this weakness which causes an “illegal labor market” (Bush 555). For instance, the employer takes this opportunity to hire the illegal immigrants so that they can pay them under table in low wages. From a business person’s point of view, this is going to be a positive effect since it is able to save enormous labour cost which increases the company’s profit. However, this would be unfair to the illegal immigrant workers. As a matter of fact, United States has turned out to be such a successful nation today is somewhat due to the contributions of immigrants. Therefore, the illegal immigrant workers should be given fair treatment and protected by the authority.
In conclusion, legalizing the illegal immigrant workers should be considered seriously because they have been contributing to this nation by bringing in strong integrity, worthy values and beliefs, entrepreneurial spirits which enhances the economy, and avoiding employer’s exploitation by forming a legal system. It is understood that people should not let their prejudices cloud their judgement since the illegal immigrant workers have also helped America to reduce the deficit and improve and enlarge the economy by paying taxes. For long run, it is quite evident that illegal immigrant workers should be granted legal status.
