Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? by Raymond Carver Read the following stories; ‘Neighbors’ and ‘Why Honey’ These two stories should be annotated to reflect the close reading these tasks require. Neighbours * A list of the central characters, and key textual elements in their construction (images, descriptions, names, relationships). * Bill and Arlene miller – couple * Harriet and Jim Stones – lived across the hall * Apartment * Sunburst clock * Mirror * Liquor cabinet, drinking, cigarettes * medicine Hawaiian shirt, slacks, shorts , Suit, tie, dress shoes, Cross dressing (if I look like them, I can be them) * Significant quotes which reveal key ideas in each story (again, thinking of the key textual elements through repeated imagery, oppositions/contrasts or significant dialogue) – at least 10 for each story. * ‘maybe they won’t come back’ * ‘braced themselves’ * ‘Anything could happen’ * ‘ I wish it was us’ * ‘looked at himself in the mirror and the closed his eyes and then looked again’ * ‘he tried to remember when the stones were due back, and he wondered if they would ever return’ * ‘or maybe they will come back…’ ‘what’s gotten into you’ * ‘the air was already heavy and it was vaguely sweet’ * ‘for a long time he looked out the living room window’ * Identify what the tension of the story is – what is it that creates conflict? (respond in paragraph structures and not dot point) The story examines two couples, which both live so closely to each other and are great friends but both have different lives. The Millers wish they had the lifestyle that the Stones have the holidays, adventures, and their home, through this the Millers become desperate and lost in the actions of living in the stones environment.
They try to live a lifestyle through the mirrors’ of the Stones, but realistically they know that it’s a lifestyle they may never have. * Resolution – are things concluded, how/or why not? * Nothing was resolved in the Millers situation, they still wonted that prestige lifestyle that the Stones had. * This is conveyed through the Millers still being lost and disappointed that they wish that had that lifestyle the stones have. Why Honey? * A list of the central characters, and key textual elements in their construction (images, descriptions, names, relationships). * Dear Sir – letter written to person unknown * Mother * Son Mrs and Mr Cooper – lives behind them – found the cat Trudy * Story of the cat – ‘started one summer over the fourth of july’ * Lies, and disappearing of her son * Significant quotes which reveal key ideas in each story (again, thinking of the key textual elements through repeated imagery, oppositions/contrasts or significant dialogue) – at least 10 for each story. * ‘who I am afraid of is him’ * ‘I ask my self is that man really my son’ * ‘I just can’t believe it’ * ‘no, it wasn’t my son’ * ‘why honey’ * ‘why didn’t he just tell the truth’ * ‘I am still responsible and feel I am entitled’ * ‘I should be so proud but I am afraid’ ‘I never saw him again’ * ‘it sounded strange. He was nervous’ * Identify what the tension of the story is – what is it that creates conflict? (respond in paragraph structures and not dot point) The story examines the tension between mother and son, and the unknown of another life that the son is living. Evan though the mother sees all the signs directing to something off in her sons life, she still can’t admit that her son is not the perfect little child that he once was. She constantly asks the question ‘why honey’, because she can’t understand the true capabilities of humans, especially in her own son.
She is afraid and fearful of the unknown, the unknown of maybe finding out the truth about her son. * Resolution – are things concluded, how/or why not? * No there was no resolution in this story, as her mum still ask the question ‘Why Honey? ’, she still doesn’t know who her son really is. The only bit of resolution that she has had is she is talking to someone Sir about it. This unknown writer still raises more questions in her life around her of what really is the truth, she is fearful of this truth that lie behind such a mystery.
